US grants waiver to Iraq to buy Iranian energy

Tehran, May 23, IRNA – The United States has granted waivers to Iraq to purchase gas and electricity from Iran, US charge d’affaires in Baghdad Joey Hood told reporters.

The US supports Iraq's self-sufficiency in power production, said Hood on Wednesday evening.

He added that Iraq is rich in natural resources and the Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi has stated.

Iraqi Government has declared that Baghdad will not follow US sanctions on Iran and will go ahead with traditional trade and economic cooperation with Iran.
The Iraqi officials said that Iraq needs the energy coming from Iran and that they cannot stop buying that at least for another three years.

The US unilaterally pulled out of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JPOCA) that was endorsed by UN Security Council Resolution 2231 and restored the illegal sanctions on Iran.
