Tunnel locomotives can be used for displacement of wagons in metro projects and water transfer projects. By considering of the maximum slope (‰30) in mainline rather than (‰50) in metro projects, consequently, the tractive effort and brake systems should be design unique. Furthermore, this locomotive can be used in different types of tunnel with minimum curve radius of 40 m.
MAPNATL was designed and manufactured by MLC in two hydrostatic and hydrodynamic categories based on the power transmission system. Currently, MAPNA tunneling locomotives are operating in Mashhad and Tabriz Metro Projects.
