Iran, Russia Opt for Boosting Trade Exchanges, Economic Cooperation

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian and Russian officials in a meeting on Saturday underlined the need for the further expansion of trade and economic cooperation.

During the meeting in the city of Yekaterinburg today, Head of Gilan Chamber of Commerce Hadi Tizhoush Taban and senior officials from Russia's Sverdlovsk Oblast province explored avenues for bolstering and reinvigorating trade ties. "The Gilan Chamber of Commerce has been established 90 years ago and it has sufficient experience in the expansion of relation with target countries," Tizhoush Taban said during the meeting. The head of Oral Chamber of Commerce, for his part, pointed to the status quo of Iran-Russia trade relations, and said, "Iran is our important neighbor and we have always prioritized broadening of economic and trade relations with the country." Last month, Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak announced that the trade exchanges between Tehran and Moscow have increased 69% in the first six months of the current year compared with the same period in 2015. "Within the framework of plans agreed by Tehran and Moscow, the trade value of the two countries' exchanges has increased 69% in the first six months of 2016 compared with the same period last year," Novak said in a meeting with Iranian Industry, Mine and Trade Minister Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh in St. Petersburg. He said that the development came as his country's trade exchanges with other countries, including China, have decreased in the same period.
